Our “Fat Tuesday” meeting started with Jim “Creole” Aldige giving us info on the New Orleans celebration of Mardi Gras along with the beads and candies in purple, green, and gold that Donna Wilson had placed on each table. This Mardi Gras recognition was capped by serving King Cake as the dessert at the end of the meal (several members found a “baby” in their King Cake dessert). Other announcements were March birthdays by Paul Anderson (Rich Morrison, Catherine Tulenko, John Moorman, and Martha Gordon), reports on our successful diaper drive and TFG dinner at Whiskey and Oyster, and updates on the refurbishment underway for our club website by Chris Herndon. To access the website go to “rotaryclubofalexandria.net” and try it out. Our speaker was Cyrus Ansary who wrote the book “George Washington: Deal-Maker-in-Chief” who shared info on Washington’s role in helping the new United States to establish economic and legal systems that have played key roles in support our new nation and it’s long running successes. He’d donated copies of his book to the club which were sold with funds going to the Alexandria Rotary Foundation in support of the charities we champion each year.
